Introduction to Motion Sensors - Inclinometers

Motion sensors are a type of sensor or transducer that capture motion-related data. They are made to detect and measure movement, speed, position, and acceleration of an object, and translate those signals into an electrical output. Generally, motion sensors are divided into two categories – inclinometers and accelerometers. Inclinometers are rotational sensors that measure angles and detect whether an object is tilted or inclined from its intended resting position. They measure angles of an object in three axes, also known as X, Y and Z axis. Through the combination of the angular measurements from the three axes, degrees, and direction, the inclinometer can estimate if the object is at rest or in motion, and measure the pitch, yaw, and roll of the object. A typical inclinometer in the market is the G-NSDPG2-001, which is great for applications that require tilt monitoring and measurement. In this article, we will explore the application field of the G-NSDPG2-001 and explain its working principle.

Application Field of the G-NSDPG2-001

G-NSDPG2-001 measures tilt and inclination in all three orthogonal axes by providing two analog outputs. The tilt angle range of the G-NSDPG2-001 is -90° to +90°. The ability of the device to measure within such a wide range makes it well-suited for a large variety of applications, especially those that require coordination of several moving parts. Examples include, but are not limited to:
  • Automotive systems – It can be used to monitor the tilt of vehicle suspension systems, to detect the angle of the seat and adjust it as needed.
  • Aviation systems – They can help make adjustments to aircraft’s wings or tail fins for preventing turbulence and adjusting aircraft performance.
  • Robotics – It is used to detect turns and tilt of robotic joints or segments.
  • Boat operation – Inclinometer can be used to stabilize boats in rough waters and navigate them safely.
  • Construction and earthquake monitoring – They can detect building deformation and sense the tilt of structures in order to detect and monitor for seismic activity.
  • Leaning– An inclinometer can be used to detect body posture changes and lean compensation in the healthcare and industrial settings.

Working Principle of the G-NSDPG2-001

The G-NSDPG2-001 uses a patented “arbitrary tilt” principle to measure angles in all three axes without any reference sensor or calibration. This is done by using two analog outputs, V_OUT and R_OUT. V_OUT measures relative voltage and R_OUT measures relative resistance proportional to the tilt angle of the sensor in each axis. This allows the G-NSDPG2-001 to measure angles ranging from -90° to +90° without the need for zeroing or calibration. The device contains two force-balanced mechanical sensors. As the object moves, these sensors interact and generate a measured voltage at the outputs. Therefore, the sensor can measure inclination without the need for a reference axis or initial orientation. Each output provides an analog voltage signal that is proportional to the angle of inclination in its respect axis. The G-NSDPG2-001 offers the advantage of great stability, wide bandwidth and high accuracy thanks to its compensation system and bulk accelerometer. This helps the inclinometer to accurately measure even slight or rapidly changing inclination, and reduces errors from hard shock, vibration, and other external interference.

Conclusion

Motion sensors are an essential part of any motion-based device or system, providing the necessary feedback and enabling the deployment of complex applications. The G-NSDPG2-001, an inclinometer, is a particularly suitable device for such applications, widening the scope of applications and enabling coordination of several moving parts to be achieved. Its ability to measure the angle of inclination in all three axes without the need for zeroing or pre-calibration makes it a great choice for many industrial, aviation, automotive, robotics and medical applications.
