GBA-3 and GBA-4 fuses are electrical specialty fuses designed specifically for high-voltage limiting applications, primarily in high-voltage or extra-high-voltage transmission lines. The fuses are high-speed, circuit interrupting devices designed to provide short-circuit protection in unobstructed air, making them well-suited for application on high-voltage power systems.
GBA-3 and GBA-4 fuses are single-element links whose interrupting capability is independent of all external conductors. They are rated for 32 kilovolts (kV) and have IEC type ratings of 200 amp (A) for GBA-3 and 400 A for GBA-4. The fuses use a bimetallic element and a unique triggering mechanism to time-limit current between 10 and 25 milliseconds (ms) allowing for extremely accurate contact breaking at very high DC voltages. This time limit is significantly shorter than that of traditional fuses, making GBA-3/4 fuses ideal for protecting circuits against short-circuit current surges without causing additional power losses. In addition, GBA-3/4 fuses have the advantage of breaking current without damage to either the fuse or the components they are protecting.
GBA-3/4 fuses detect an overcurrent condition in one of two ways. The first, direct-action, occurs in a short circuit when the current surge heats up the bimetallic element, expanding it and causing the fuse to open and break the circuit. This allows the insulated part of the fuse to slowly cool down, allowing it to reset and be re-used later. The second, thermal-action, occurs when the ambient temperature around the fuse rises, causing the bimetallic element to expand and break the circuit. This, similar to the direct-action mechanism, causes the fuse to reset and be re-used later.
GBA-3 and GBA-4 fuses are commonly used to protect transmission lines from short-circuit currents on live power systems. By limiting the current flow in a fault condition, the fuses prevent damage to the transmission line as well as injuries to personnel working on it. GBA-3/4 fuses can also be used to protect high-voltage transformers, busbars, cables, circuit breakers and other components found in electrical systems.
In addition, GBA-3/4 fuses are also used in high-voltage industrial installations such as electrical substations. The fast-acting, single-element design of the fuses makes them a cost-effective solution for protecting large-scale installations with highly integrated systems. Because of their fast-acting design, GBA-3/4 fuses can also be used as temporary protection in applications where frequent faults occur. This allows operators to reset the system faster without having to replace the fuse each time.
GBA-3/4 fuses are also used in residential applications, most commonly in refrigerators and sump pumps. The low-current requirements and compact design of GBA-3/4 fuses make them an ideal choice for protecting sensitive electronic components found in these applications. By quickly interrupting the circuit before damage is done, GBA-3/4 fuses protect the components and extend the life of the equipment.
The GBA-3 and GBA-4 fuses are designed with a unique, fast-acting bimetallic element and triggering mechanism, allowing them to be used in a wide variety of applications. Their ability to time-limit current between 10 and 25 ms makes them well-suited for short-circuit protection on high-voltage and extra-high-voltage transmission lines as well as industrial and residential installations. GBA-3/4 fuses are a reliable, cost-effective solution for protecting sensitive components and personnel in an electrical system.
