Bridge rectifiers are composed of popwer diodes and are utilized in the conversion of alternating current to direct current. They are predominantly used in low-power applications for powering electronic devices such as computers, TV sets, and stereos. The most typical application of a bridge rectifier is the rectification of AC waveforms at the input of power supplies in electronic equipment.

GBPC5010W-G Application Field and Working Principle

The GBPC5010W-G bridge rectifier is a 10-A, 50-V, single-phase bridge rectifier, typically used in low voltage, low power applications. It consists of four 1N5819 Schottky Barrier Rectifiers (SBR’s), connected in a full-wave bridge configuration. The reverse blocking voltage (also known as the Peak Inverse Voltage - PIV) is 50V. The GBPC5010W-G can operate between -40°C and 100°C and features low thermal resistance and low forward voltage drop.

The GBPC5010W-G bridge rectifier works on the principle of voltage limitation. The 1N5819 is a diode with a built-in avalanche (zener) diode, and the 40V breakdown voltage ensures that the forward current does not exceed this value. When a positive voltage is applied to the anode and the cathode is grounded, the current flows from the anode to the cathode through the SBR.

At the same time, a negative voltage is applied to the cathode and the anode is grounded. When the negative voltage is below the PIV of the bridge rectifier, the diode is reverse biased and the bridge rectifier blocks current. This is the case for all alternating voltages, hence the name full-wave bridge rectifier. The maximum voltage that can be applied to the device must not exceed the PIV. If a voltage above this value is applied, it will cause the bridge rectifier to short-circuit and blow.

The GBPC5010W-G is used in low power applications like power dielectric heating, AC motor drives, and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), as it is not suitable for high power applications due to its low output power. It has excellent thermal conductivity, which allows it to be used in conditions with high temperatures without the need for an external heat sink.
