Crystals

Crystals are an important class of materials whose properties are determined by their crystal structure and electric, magnetic and elastic properties. A crystal is a solid in which atoms, molecules or ions (ions) are arranged in an orderly pattern that extends in all three spatial dimensions. This orderly pattern results from the fact that the atoms and/or ions in the crystal interlock in a specific way. The result is a very stable material that is hard and extremely versatile in its electrical and magnetic properties.

The GL100F23CET family of crystal oscillators is based on a patented Silicon on Diamond technology that was developed to provide higher frequency and greater accuracy than had previously been available in the industry. The device features a refined capacitance tuning architecture and advanced locking technology that ensures the crystal is in a stable state and operates at optimal accuracy over temperature and process variations. The oscillator is also designed to have very low power consumption and a wide operating temperature range.

Application Field

The GL100F23CET crystal oscillator is primarily intended to be used as a clock source in telecommunications networks. Due to its wide operating frequency, low power consumption and good temperature stability, the device is particularly suitable for baseband platforms and protocol-based wireless networks such as IEEE 802.11x, 3G, and GPRS. The device is also suitable for use in digital systems such as portable computers, and digital cameras and scanner devices.

Working Principle

The GL100F23CET crystal oscillator is based on a patent-pending capacitance tuning technology. The device includes a crystal resonator and an oscillator circuit which is used to generate a sinusoidal output at the specified frequency. The capacitance tuning architecture allows the oscillator to track changes in the load capacitance and temperature while the locking technology prevents damaging oscillation.

The oscillator circuit works by converting an alternating current input into an alternating output current. The frequency of the output current is determined by the resonant frequency of the crystal, which is determined by the crystal’s mass, size, and shape. The oscillator circuit further amplifies the current and generates a sinusoidal output that is used to clock the device.

The crystal oscillator also includes additional components such as capacitors, resistors, and inductors which are used to control the output current and maintain stable operation over temperature and process variations. In order to ensure that the oscillator is always in its optimal state, the device includes an advanced locking technology which locks the oscillator in a state of low power consumption and accuracy.
