GMT fuses, also known as G-type fuses, are specialty fuses specifically developed for the protection of electrical circuits that are exposed to electrical impulses, short circuits, voltage transients, and voltage dropouts. Their primary function is to act as an emergency shutdown device in the event of excessive current, short circuits, or other safety-related events. GMT fuses are manufactured with a unique design, consisting of four components: a nonmagnetic base case, two wire slots, three-position push-to-release spring, and a magnetic wire casing.

The first step in the operation of the GMT fuse is for the spring to be pressed against the wire slot. This action causes the spring to become energized. Once energized, the wire casing slides over the spring, creating an electrical arc between the two conductors that passes through the wire casing. The magnetic wire casing then acts as a redirect for the high-voltage current. Because this arc is extremely powerful, it is capable of breaking through the insulation between the two conductors, effectively locking them in place.

When the electric current begins to exceed the rated current carrying capacity of the fuse, the magnetic wire casing quickly shortens the arc to protect the circuit. This is accomplished by the rapid formation of a metal-oxide film that coats the inside of the wire casing. When this occurs, the increased electrical resistance produces a significant amount of heat. This heat is generated quickly enough that the the wire casing melts away from the spring, breaking the electrical circuit.

Because of its specialized design, the GMT fuse is capable of rapidly and safely protecting electrical circuits in extremely high-voltage situations. Its design also allows it to automatically reset itself after the current is turned off, eliminating the need for manual re-setting. Furthermore, the fuse\'s ability to dissipate heat quickly and safely is an important feature of its design, ensuring that the fuse is able to protect circuits with minimal disruption or damage to the surrounding equipment.
