1. Describe
The HD3SS3212IRKSR is a high-speed bidirectional multiplexer or passive switch in a demultiplexer configuration for USB Type-C™ applications supporting USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 data rates. Based on control pin SEL, the device provides to open the channel between differential port B or port C to port A. The HD3SS3212IRKSR is a general purpose analog differential passive switch that can be used in any high speed interface application requiring a common mode voltage range of 0 to 2 V and differential signal differential amplitudes up to 1800 mVpp. It uses adaptive tracking to ensure that the channel remains constant for the entire common-mode voltage range. The excellent dynamic characteristics of this device allow high-speed switching with minimal attenuation to signal eye diagrams with little additional jitter. It consumes <2 mW when operating and has a shutdown mode result of <20 µW that can be performed through the OEn pin.

5. Function description
The HD3SS3212IRKSR has two power modes, active/normal operation mode and standby/shutdown mode. In standby mode, the device consumes very little current to conserve maximum power. To enter standby mode, the OEn control pin is pulled high through a resistor and must be held high. For active/normal operation, the OEn control pin should be pulled low to GND or dynamically controlled to toggle between H or L. The HD3SS3212IRKSR consumes <2 mW in operation and has a shutdown mode executable by the EN pin, resulting in <20 µW.
6. Application Information
The HD3SS3212IRKSR is a general-purpose 2-channel high-speed mux/demux type switch that can be used to route high-speed signals between two different locations on a circuit board. The HD3SS3212IRKSR supports multiple high speed data protocols, differential amplitude <1800 mVpp, common mode voltage <2.0 V, same as USB 3.0 and DisplayPort 1.2. The device's single-select input (SEL) pins can be easily controlled by available GPIO pins in the system or by a microcontroller. The HD3SS3212IRKSR with adaptive common mode tracking technology can support applications where common mode is different between RX and TX pairs. Other applications are more generic because different connectors can be used. Many interfaces require AC coupling between transmitter and receiver. 0402 capacitors are the first choice to provide AC coupling; 0603 size capacitors will also work. Avoid 0805 size capacitors and C packs. When placing AC coupling capacitors, it is best to place them symmetrically. A capacitor value of 0.1 µF is best and should match the ±signal pair. Designers should place them along the TX pairs on the system board, which are usually routed on the top layer of the board. There are various placement options for AC coupling capacitors. Since the switch requires a bias voltage, the designer must place the capacitor on one side of the switch. If they are on either side of the switch, a bias voltage should be provided. Coupling capacitors are placed between the switch and the endpoints. In this case, the switch is biased by the system/host controller.
