A single HDSP-815E module can display upper- and lowercase characters, numbers, the Roman numerals ”I”, ”IV”, and ”V”, as well as a single space character - " ".Each segment of the HDSP-815E is illuminated by an independent LED. To make lighting appear uniform, the same amount of current is sent through each segment. As each segment only requires a tiny amount of power, the whole module only consumes as much as a single LED.The current through each segment is controlled using a DC-DC converter. This is a switch-mode voltage converter that changes the input voltage to a suitable low voltage for the HDSP-815E display.
