The HDSP-A213 is an acronym of Hewlett-Packard Display Product A213, which was developed by Hewlett-Packard in the late 1980s. It is one of the most widely used seven-segment display modules. It is designed to display text information in 4-digit form or 4-character form.The HDSP-A213 is categorized under Display Modules - LED Character and Numeric since it uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) as the source for displaying characters and numbers. The overall dimensions of the module are 26.5 x 21.1 mm. Moreover, it is built with a four-line array of seven-segment LEDs, which are grouped into two sections. It has a voltage rating of 5 V between the individual LED segments with a common anode and the LED’s positive tolerant current is 25 mA.The HDSP-A213 can be used for various applications, such as for digital clocks, timer sensors, control systems, or even as a basic data display. It is widely used as a numeric display in digital computers and electronic devices, as well as in advertising and educational areas.In terms of its working principle, the HDSP-A213 module has four channels that individually control a single seven-segment LED. Each channel is controlled by an active low input which defines which segments should be activated. The common anode is connected with the positive voltage from the power source and the seven-segment LEDs are connected in series with the common anode. When the active low input is set to 0, the corresponding segments of the seven-segment LEDs will be activated and the other segments remain off. When the active low input is set to 1, the corresponding segments of the seven-segment LEDs will remain off and the other segments can be activated. The module is usually used with a control unit that sets the appropriate input values to control the seven-segment LED displays.The HDSP-A213 module is also available in two LED colors, viz. red and green, with different levels of brightness.
