HDSP-G401 is a general purpose seven segment LED display module that belongs to the class of Display Modules – LED Character and Numeric. It comprises of seven individual LEDs with segments to display numerals and also other characters. The numerals that can be displayed range from 0 to 9, apart from these, characters like ‘A’, ‘b’, ‘C’, ‘H’, ‘L’, and others can also be displayed using this module. Each segment of the display module has thick walls to enclose the LEDs in order to prevent any external force from damaging it. The purpose of the seven segment LED is to be used as a display for control and monitoring purposes. Its application field can be found in industrial control systems, data loggers and storing units, automation systems, 7 segment LED displays, and also as indicators in measuring instruments.

The module is integrated with a driver IC which will provide the power to display the respective characters. It is designed to be controlled either in current or voltage drive mode. The corresponding driver IC will provide the current or voltage required in order to power the module. The module has a maximum voltage rating of 40V and a maximum current of 10mA. The power consumption of the module is limited to 25mA at maximum when 12V is supplied to the module.

The module has a 7 segment layout with seven pokers arranged in the same order more or less concentrically. The ULN 2003 chip is the control chip of the display module. This chip is manufactured by Texas Instruments and it is basically a monolithic high voltage, high current Darlington driver with input controlling capability. This chip is integrated with seven inputs which are connected to various pins of the HDSP-G401 module. It also provides an output pin so that the controller can output its own signals to arrive at the target character. The input pins of the chip must be driven with a logic signal of 0V or 5V in order to display the desired character.

The module in itself is equipped with an 8-bit buffer chip which helps in storing the characters and instructions given to it. This chip is used to control the display module when instructions are given through data lines. This chip is responsible for the conversion of data received from external sources and then sending out signal to the display module in order to make the correct character appear. This chip also helps in dimming and setting the brightness of the display module when needed. There is also a time delay chip which helps in delaying the display for a certain time and creating a flash effect in certain cases.
