The optical encoder head detects the pattern of binary bits using a central photo-diode and four photo-diodes organized so that the light from the optical source is focused to the different photo-diodes. As the disk code wheel rotates, the light incident on the photo-diodes changes in a known sequence. The device then determines the pattern of binary bits for each encoder and outputs the appropriate digital signal.
The HEDS-5140#A12 enable precise measurement of changes in the rotational speed and/or a rotational angle by counting up the number of slots on the disk code wheel with a high resolution. This is made possible thanks to the high resolution provided by the current versions of the encoders, which can scale up to 24,000 counts per revolution. The HEDS-5140#A12 also provide exceptional accuracy, with the ability to detect linear movements up to 0.1 micrometer.
