Shift registers are a type of sequential logic circuit used for sequential data transfer. Shift registers can also be used to store individual bits of data in a serial fashion and then shift them out at a later time. This type of register is a key element in computers and often used in conjunction with other types of logic gates and registers. The HEF4021BTT-Q100J is a high-speed bipolar five-stage static shift register with complementary outputs.

HEF4021BTT-Q100J has many industrial applications. It is commonly used in system encoding/decoding, ring counters, shift registers, multiplex/ demultiplexers, diagnostics and transpositions. Also, it is used in high-speed analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, clock synchronization, digital filtering, logic implementation and high-speed structured logic programming. Additionally, it is used for data count/shift, serial data transmission and parallel data transfer.

Working Principle:

HEF4021BTT-Q100J operates by using the clock input to transfer the data in serial, while using the shift/load input to control the register internally. A clock edge is applied to the clock input; with each rising clock edge the data present at the least significant bit (LSB) is shifted one place to the right and the data present at the most significant bit (MSB) is made available at the QN output. When the shift/load input is high, the data present at the inputs is loaded into the register and placed in the correct bit positions. This is done in two phases, the first is a set phase when the shift/load is low and clock is high and the second is a load phase when the shift/load is high and the clock is low. The output from each flip-flop is made available at the QN outputs. If the reset line is activated, the QN outputs are reset to logic low level.
