Temperature is integral to many processes, and its control is essential to many areas of industry. Temperature sensors are devices which aid in temperature control, by allowing automation of the processes involved. RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors), known also as PRTs (Platinum Resistance Thermometers), utilize a material such as a metal to detect changes in temperature over time or over short-term control processes. The commonly used RTD is the HEL-777-A-U-0, which is designed to measure temperatures in a range from -200℃ to 850℃, and is used specifically to measure temperatures in high-pressure processes such as those used in petrochemical production.
HEL-777-A-U-0 RTDs operate on the principle of resistance. The RTD is composed of a sensing element and a Wheatstone bridge circuit. The sensing element is generally composed of a thin metal wire, most commonly platinum, wound into a coil.
