Working Principle

The inductor\'s magnetic core acts as an air-gap that imparts a property known as inductance to the device. This property restricts the natural flow of current. The magnitude of this effect is often indicated by the unit of measurement referred to as the ‘inductance’ (L). The electrical property of inductance is voltage-dependent, meaning that the greater the voltage, the greater the stored energy.

As the voltage increases, the current lags behind the voltage in a characteristic known as phase shift. This is because the inductor actively absorbs energy from the circuit in order to increase the strength of the magnetic field. Once the voltage reaches its peak, the current will remain steady until the voltage begins to decrease.

At this point, the magnetic field of the inductor begins to collapse. As it does, it releases the stored energy back into the circuit, causing the current to rise until it matches the falling voltage. This process creates an opposition to the original flow of current similar to a resistor, but with far less power consumption. Thus the inductor functions as an energy-storage device.
