The HLE-109-02-S-DV-A (hereafter referred to as HLE) is a rectangular connector in the Headers, Receptacles, Female sockets category. This is a subminiature rectangular connector using an insulation displacement contact system. Common applications for the HLE include medical, industrial, military, and automotive. This connector are designed for power applications, but are capable of both power and signal.
The physical aspects of this connector will be addressed firstly. This connector is three (3) tail long, three (3) housed positions, and crimp style. The dimensions of the tail and housed positions are 0.6mm, 0.55mm, and 0.5mm respectively. The insulator material is a combination of UL94V-0 PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) and gold-plated phosphor bronze. The contacts used are Nickel plated brass as well. The mating cycle for the HLE is rated at a minimum of 200 cycles, and each contact is capable of a maximum current of 3 amperes. This connector is also IP67/IP68 rated for dust and water protection. The operating temperature of the HLE is -45°C to 105°C.
The key feature of the HLE is its insulation displacement contact system. To explain this feature the basic operation of insulation displacement connectors will be outlined. Insulation displacement connectors (IDC) are connectors that use either knife blades or pins, to pierce through the insulation jacket surrounding a conductor. In order to achieve this, the blades/pins are designed to be sharp near their ends. After piercing the insulation, the blade/pin applies pressure onto the conductor so that a connection is established. This eliminates the need for striping prior to termination; isolation displacement connectors are designed so that the blade/pins are located far enough apart in order to prevent shorting. This technology also reduces connection time, as opposed to soldering or crimping.
The HLE utilizes a double row IDC system. This is suitable for applications in which multiple points of termination are required, or the connection requires higher current capacity. This also further reduces the assembly time by allowing wires from both sides to be inserted simultaneously. The two types of contact systems in the HLE are the “H” and “V” styles. The “H” style has the wires connected side by side, while the “V” style utilizes a 90-degree angled double row. The “H” style contacts are plated with an additional layer of tin in order to prevent corrosion within the IDC blade, and therefore increases the life of the contact. The 90-degree “V” style connections are able to achieve the same resistance as the “H” style, but has the added benefit of having a high-performance resistance to vibration.
The HLE has a wide range of applications, as mentioned before, due to its insulation displacement contact system. The medical, automotive, military, and industrial fields all make use of this capability. For example, in medical applications such as medical equipment or patient monitoring devices, the IDC system provides greater assurance of connection reliability due to its low contact resistance. For volume applications such as consumer, automotive, and industrial programs, the IDC system also provides great cost savings over traditional soldering or crimping methods. The military field also makes use of this system due to its superior vibration resistance, as well as its capability for high current and multiple terminations.
In conclusion, the HLE-109-02-S-DV-A connector is a three (3) tail, three (3) housed positions, crimp style rectangular connector of the Headers, Receptacles, and Female sockets class. It is a subminiature insulated displacement contact system providing protection against dust and water, and a wide operating temperature range. The HLE is suitable for a variety of applications, such as medical, automotive, military, and industrial, due to its multiple and high current contacts, in addition to its superior vibration resistance.
