LED Indication - Discrete

LED (Light Emitting Diode) indication is one of the most common forms of discrete indicating, used to provide visual feedback of a device\'s status or operational state. LEDs can be used to directly indicate states such as on and off, or they can be used in a more elaborate fashion to provide a degree of status indication. LEDs can be used in combination with other discrete electronics to provide messages, alarms or warning lights, as well as act as indicators for sensors.

Working Principle

The HLMP-DB25-B0002 LED module works on the simple principle of a diode, where electrons are excited when a positive voltage is applied and pass into a “semifluid” state. This suspends the conduction of the current, emitting a light. LEDs in these modules operate at a constant current, usually 12mA or less.

In this module the LED board has a series of LEDs in parallel protected by a protection diode. This prevent the current running backwards. A resistoring is also incorporated which brings the current of the LED’s just below 12mA before the module is switched on. This type of LED module operates within the range of Vcc (7 to 36V dependent on resistor values used).

The LED board has two slots for mounting, and when the module is mounted it is electrically connected using a connector. It then operates in different methods depending on the external driving circuit. The simplest is ‘ON / OFF’, where the LEDs flash when power is ON and OFF. Around the module it is possible to connect external switches and resistors to control the LEDs according to the user’s requirements.

An external signal is also allowed to control the LEDs. For example, a signal of 3V can be used as logic 0 and +5V is used as logic 1 when driving a processor or a microcontroller. Using this signal, each of the 8 LEDs can be programmed to indicate different states.

In much the same way an external signal (for example a PWM signal) can be used to produce different levels of brightness. The brightness of each LED can be controlled individually and brightness levels can range from 0 to 99.

Also, this module allows for single color displays as well as multi-color displays. The color of the LEDs is chosen according to the customer’s preference and can range from red, orange, yellow, green and blue.
