RF Mixers
RF mixers, as the name implies, are devices which mix two incoming signals together. They are used in Radio Frequency electronics, including both broadcast and communications receivers, transmitters and transceivers. The most common type of mixer is the Gilbert cell multiplier, which is a four-terminal device consisting of two active components, being transistors or FETs, and two passive components such as resistors or capacitors. The HMC-MDB169 is a four-port double-balanced mixer, used in applications where high performance is needed, such as receiver up/down conversion, instrumentation signaldown conversion and transmitter frequency conversion, from baseband to RF. This single-ended package contains two Gilbert cell multipliers, along with inductors, resistors and capacitors in a single IC.The HMC-MDB169 is designed to convert a wideband signal from the RF input to the low-band IF output, while allowing the receiving signal to be mixed with both the local oscillator (LO) and the image frequency (IF). This mixer features a wide frequency range, from 0.1GHz to 6GHz, low insertion loss at any operating frequency, and very low distortion, which together enables wide dynamic range and high out-of-band rejection. The main components of the HMC-MDB169 are two Gilbert cell multipliers that are connected in differential configuration, which allows for a high level of conversion gain. The Gilbert cells consist of a series of transistors which are arranged to create a negative resistance effect, which increases the response of the multiplier by increasing the gain. The negative feedback loop also helps to reduce the distortion of the signal. The inductors and capacitors in the mixers are used to adjust the frequency response of the device. In combination with the low level of distortion, the frequency response allows the mixer to reject out-of-band interference, as well as provide a sharp cutoff. In summary, the HMC-MDB169 is a high performance four-port double-balanced mixer that is designed for baseband-to-RF, lightwave, and instrumentation applications. It has a wide frequency range, low insertion loss, and very low distortion, which enable wide dynamic range and high out-of-band rejection. The main components are two Gilbert cell multipliers connected in differential configuration, as well as inductors, resistors, and capacitors, which together provide the desired frequency response. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
