RF mixers are electronic components used to convert one input frequency range into another frequency range in order to perform frequency translation in RF systems. HMC215LP4E is a high performance monolithic silicon double balanced mixer designed for use over the frequency range of 0.1 GHz – 4 GHz. HMC215LP4E Working Principle
HMC215LP4E is an ideal double balanced mixer that supports up to 4 GHz for RF applications. Its operating principle is based on the principal of a balanced mixer; which is a three-port device consisting of an RF port, LO port and IF port. With the ports being balanced, a signal from the RF input port is split equally and applied to an LO port, and an IF port. The LO port is where the mixer receives its local oscillator voltage while the IF port is where the resultant received or transmitted signal is connected to.
When the LO voltage is applied to the LO port, it is split equally and applied to the commonly connected junction of the RF input. The LO signal creates a balanced mixer with the RF signal, thus creating sum and difference frequencies centered about the LO frequency. These are routed out of the output IF port as a result of the go and return paths being matched. As the LO voltage is removed, the go and return paths lag in amplitude which creates a negative source resistance to the RF input resulting in a low conversion loss.
The other advantage of HMC215LP4E is that it is equipped with state-of-the-art temperature control circuitry that adjusts for temperature variations and ensures that the conversion loss is held to a minimum. It also has excellent matched paths. This ensures that the conversation loss and isolation between ports is held to a minimum.
