RF switch is a type of switched filter that defines the connection between two sections of a radio frequency (RF) transmission line. RF switches are used in a variety of RF and microwave applications, such as antennas, amplifiers, receivers and transmitters. In transmission systems, RF switches can be placed between outputs of RF devices so that only one signal at a time is passed along the transmission line. The HMC347LP3E is a RF switch from Avago Technologies, and is specifically designed for applications that require ultra-low insertion loss and high isolation. The working principle of the HMC347LP3E is based on a PIN diode control circuit and absorptive switch design. The PIN diode control circuit is primarily responsible for driving the three-bit TTL input signal to the three ports of the RF switch. The output of the control circuit then determines the state of the switch. When an input signal is applied to one of the three ports, the switch is activated and the corresponding port is connected to the output port.

Similarly, when an input signal is applied to one of the other two ports, the switch is deactivated and the corresponding port is disconnected from the output port. This ensures that only one signal at a time is allowed on the output port of the switch. The absorptive switch design of the HMC347LP3E provides excellent isolation between ports, which prevents crosstalk and other interference.

The HMC347LP3E is ideally suited for use in cellular phone base station and wireless communication systems. It can be used as an antenna switch, an attenuator switch, a transmitter/receiver switch or a frequency synthesizer switch.
