HMC523 is a wideband low distortion RF double balanced Gilbert mixer which is an active device with the active elements being operated from a single DC voltage bias source. It is mainly used in RF mixers. Its application fields are introduced as below.
Mixer
The HMC523 is designed to provide high IP3 and low conversion loss while maintaining good linearity and low noise figure in the frequency range of DC to 8GHz. It is ideal for use in RF mixers or up-converters applications. The advantages of HMC523 include low distortion, low LO drive power, wide operating bandwidth, high IP3, and low noise figure. It is quite suitable for the high-performance radio reception system.
VCO
HMC523 can also be used as a frequency converter of Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). VCO is an oscillator with an output frequency that is proportional to its control voltage. Many FM radio systems use VCOs, as they can track two frequency bands with fast frequency switching and appropriate sounds. The mixer can drive the VCO to generate the desired frequency signal due to its good capability of frequency conversion.
VSWR Converter
HMC523 is also a good device as VSWR converter. In the communication systems, the VSWR between the signal and environment decides the signal transmission quality. The mixer can convert the input RF signal to IF signal and then the VSWR can be calculated easily in the frequency domain. Besides, the mixer can also measure the distance accurately since the input RF signal changes during the process of propagation.
Working Principle
The HMC523 is a double balanced Gilbert mixers with two RF ports, two IF ports, one local oscillator (LO) port, and one voltage bias port. The RF ports are differential ports, which means that the good isolation of RF signals (up to 40dB) is provided. The LO port is single-ended, and requires a single-ended voltage stimuli to drive the mixer. The mixer has a Gilbert cell topology which converts the input RF signals from RF to IF frequencies. Due to the quadrature LO signals drive the LO port, the IF frequency is twice the LO frequency. The mixer can be operated from a single DC voltage bias, and has an operating temperature range from -40 to +85 ° C.
