RF Switches - HMC545AE Application Field and Working Principle
HMC545AE RF Switches are one of the most popular RF switches in use today. They are well suited to applications in aerospace, medical, defense, and other specialized RF and communication systems. The HMC545AE employs a dual-actuator switch which allows for co-locatable terminals, one for each primary input, providing free-space switch isolation without crosstalk.
The HMC545AE\'s dual actuator design enables it to support switching between two or more different signals with minimal loss or insertion. The dual actuator inside the switch also lets it provide ports for two separate conditions of operation. It is important to note that the dual actuator allows for multiple signal paths to the individual actuators making the HMC545AE a very flexible switch. For example, it can be used as a transceiver switch as well as a filter circuit.
The HMC545AE\'s unique design also offers the ability to “stack” up to two additional dual-actuator switches. Stacking two or more switches allows for up to four separate signal paths to each individual actuator thereby providing much greater flexibility when used in a broadcast environment.
The HMC545AE\'s internal circuitry includes a pair of antennas, an oscillator, a pair of digital switches, a pair of resistors, and an impedance-matching transformer. The oscillator generates an on-demand pulse, which in turn triggers the digital switches to create the active connection of the required signal path. The two resistors are used as current-limiting elements, while the transformer provides the necessary impedance matching for the RF signal to travel through.
The HMC545AE\'s design features low insertion loss and high isolation. This is attributed to the dual-actuator switch configuration and low insertion loss of the transformer and antennas. It provides superior performance in noisy environments such as in some military and industrial applications.
