The two signals are mixed at their respective frequencies, then the resulting signals are amplified through the LNA, before they are recombined. The resulting output has increased gain, improved noise performance, and lower distortion compared to an active mixer with the same input signal level and frequency. The HMC557 can also be used as a frequency doubler or summing device.
