RF switches are devices that allow signals from different sources to be selectively routed to different paths. The HMC595E is a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) RF switch that is used in high frequency application. The HMC595E is a high linearity, high performance, low insertion loss, and low cost solution for RF switching applications.
The HMC595E is a compact SPDT switch that operates in the 0.35 to 4 GHz frequency range. It features an exceptional low insertion loss of 1.2 dB at 3.0 GHz and a very high isolation of 55 dB at 3.0 GHz. It is suitable for high frequency applications such as LTE, WiMAX, WLAN, GSM, and CDMA. The HMC595E also has fast switching speed up to 20 nS and low power consumption.
The HMC595E is available in a tiny 5 x 5 mm package with connectors. This makes it an ideal solution for space-constrained applications. It features a unique monolithic design that eliminates the need for tuning or adjustment resulting in high performance, low insertion loss and high isolation over its entire frequency range.
The HMC595E working principle relies upon principles of resonance and electronic switching. It operates in either a single-pole single-throw (SPST) or single-pole double-throw (SPDT) configuration, enabling its use in various applications where different frequencies must be switched. When it is in SPST mode, the HMC595E uses two banks of PIN diodes in series between the control voltage source and the antenna port. The two banks are tuned to two different frequencies with different resonant impedances. By applying a DC voltage to the control voltage source, the PIN diode banks switch in one bank or the other depending on the frequency requirements of the antenna port.
When in SPDT mode, the HMC595E works similar to SPST mode but with additional PIN diodes in parallel across the antenna port. This enables the switch to operate in a dual-port, or cross path, configuration. In this mode, the two banks of PIN diodes are tuned to two different frequencies and are connected to the antenna port in series. By applying a DC voltage to the control voltage source, the PIN diode banks will switch in one bank or the other.
The HMC595E is well suited for a variety of applications that require high linearity and low insertion loss including wireless base stations, medical systems, communications systems, and various RF switching applications. It is an ideal solution in applications where space or size is limited and performance is of utmost importance.
