High-Power Switches or HPS are devices that enable or disable specific electrical circuits according to set conditions. The most common type of HPS is the HPS-L or the High-Power Switch-Latch. It is used in applications such as aviation, in military and commercial vehicles, in heavy industries, and in power generation and distribution.
HPS-Ls protect against overloads, short circuits, and other faults that can cause significant damage. They are designed with automatic resetting and long-term contact endurance and also have manual resetting capability. They are self-monitoring and have self-adjusting rate of switching, enabling them to control hazardous loads. The HPS-Ls are used in high current applications where they serve as the main infeed switch.
The HPS-L is a two-pole switch with two separate contacts for each pole. Each contact is individually controlled by an internal drive system and a latch mechanism. Both the contacts and the latch are normally open and they close on demand when the electrical current passes through them. When the switch is off, the contacts remain open, preventing further current from flowing.
The HPS-L is designed in such a way that it is suitable for applications such as power analysis, high current failure, power factor correction, and electrical protection in critical systems. It is also used to prevent current fluctuations and has a high level of reliability with overload and short circuit protection.
The HPS-L provides a very fast response time with a small and extremely accurate mechanical movement. This is achieved with the use of its electro-mechanical drive system, which is less susceptible to wear and tear. The design of the switch also ensures that it is shock and vibration-resistant.
The working principle of the HPS-L is based on the force created by the mechanical energy of the drive system. This force is used to open and close the contact, as well as actuate the latch for manual resetting. The drive system is also responsible for producing the highly accurate tolerance of the switch movement, as well as maintaining the desired operating life. The contact is then opened or closed by using the spring-loaded switch arm, which is connected to the armature.
The HPS-L is designed to be used in fuseholders. Fuseholders are blocks that hold a replaceable metal-alloy fuse which is then used to protect overloaded electrical circuits. The HPS-L is installed so that it can be turned on and off without disruption or damage to the fuseholder or the circuit. When the current exceeds the fuse’s ratings, the HPS-L will be immediately locked off, thus preventing any further damage.
The HPS-L has many advantages over other types of high power switches. Its fast response time, high durability, and accurate settings make it an ideal solution for a variety of applications. The HPS-L can be used in fuseholders to ensure that circuits are protected from overloads and short circuits and its efficient design ensures that there is minimal wear and tear.
