High Voltage Fuse and their two types have become one of the most popular and sustaining power protection devices within the electrical market. The HVA-1/2 is an ideal power fuse for systems with medium and large voltage applications. It is well-suited to protect power circuits from electrical over loads and short circuits in applications such as communication centers, switchgear, rectifier mains, high voltage systems, high impedance short fuse assemblies, etc. To understand the application field and working principle of HVA-1/2, it is important to get an insight into the structure and functions of this powerful fuse.
HVA-1/2 is a high-voltage fuse of rated current ranging from 5kA up to 100kA. The rated current, also known as the current at which the fuse turns off, varies depending on the model. The current is designed to protect circuits from overly high temperatures and current levels. It is an example of an open fuse, so when the fuse operates, the fuse either just blows off, or the current is reduced down to zero. The main advantage of the HVA-1/2 fuse is that it operates reliably in both dynamic and normal operating environments. It is also designed to protect against short circuits, latent and sustained overloads.
HVA-1/2 consists of three functional components: the fuse element, the holders and the support base. The fuse element—which is also known as the ‘blade’—is composed of silver-plated copper wrapped in a high-temperature, high-dielectric silicone rubber material. This wrapping provides greater current flow and higher short-circuit resistance. The holders are generally made of high-grade glass fibre reinforced polyester or epoxy and designed to provide containment for the fuse. The support base is designed for easy installation, while also providing good insulation.
The working principle of the HVA-1/2 mainly involves its sensing capabilities. When the rated current or higher current flows through the fuse element, the built-in micro-sensors detect an overload or a short circuit and trigger the safety cut-off. This cut-off causes the fuse element to blow, breaking the electrical circuit and disconnecting the power supply from the system. Similarly, when a latent overload occurs, the micro-sensors detect a temperature increase and trigger the safety cut-off.
In terms of application field, HVA-1/2 is mainly suitable for low and medium voltage power systems. Its low rated current means it can be used in systems with greater power requirements, such as switchgear, power rectifiers, high impedance short fuse assemblies, and communication centers. It is also suitable for many other applications where high-performance and reliable power protection are needed. Examples include chemical plants, aerospace systems, motors, lighting circuits, and automotive applications.
Given its numerous advantages and reliable safety features, HVA-1/2 fuses are an important part of the electrical industry. Their highly versatile nature and reliability make them one of the most preferred power protection devices in medium to large voltage application scenarios. With its wide application field and effective working principle, HVA-1/2 fuses should be considered an essential device to ensure safe operation of electrical systems.
