Electrical Specialty Fuses The high voltage ultra-rapid (HVU) fuses are considered a very important type of fuses. They are mostly used for medium and high voltage applications and play a crucial role in circuit protection. Generally, it is required for industrial and commercial short-circuit protection in distribution and power systems. Moreover, HVU fuses have very fast-acting characteristics with high current capacity and withstand voltage capabilities. The HVU-1 type fuse has a rated voltage of 220V and meets the standards of IEC 60269-1 and GB 13639. The rated current of the fuse ranges from 10A to 630A, and its blow time can be as low as 0.01 or even 0.02 seconds under rated short circuit conditions. Often, the fuse is designed with an epoxy body that is filled with sand and inserted with an iron-nickel alloy fuse element. Additionally, a lead end cap is also added to enhance its electrical performance. The HVU-2 type fuse is another type of short-circuit protection in the HVU series. The rated voltage of the HVU-2 fuse is 7.2kV, and it meets the standards of IEC 60269 - 1 and GB/T 13639. It has a rated current range of 0.2A to 630A and can quickly break the circuit in 0.2 or 0.35 seconds, which is much faster than the traditional high voltage fuse. Unlike the HVU-1, this type of fuse does not have an iron-nickel alloy fuse element in the epoxy body, it is filled with a mixture of sand and sand-oxide materials and molded through a powder method. The working principle of the HVU fuses’ is simple. When a fault current passes through the fuse, it will cause the fuse element to heat up very quickly. Since it is filled with relatively low thermal capacity materials, such as sand or sand-oxide, and is equipped with a lead end cap, it can cause the fuse element to heat up faster and complete the circuit breaking process in a very short amount of time. The process of heat dissipation is also very efficient due to the good electrical connection between the lead end cap and the surrounding metal parts.Thus, the HVU series of fuses are ideal for medium and high voltage applications. The fuse element in the HVU-1 fuse has an excellent current interruption capability and the HVU-2 circuit breaker has a fast breaking time that is much faster compared to traditional high voltage fuses. Both types have robust designs and have passed tests under the defined standards. They can be used in combination with other protection devices, such as switches, for proper short circuit protection. Hence, they can be a great addition to any power or distribution system.
