The thermal-magnetic mechanism combines both thermal and magnetic detection to quickly detect and trip a circuit breaker.The thermal aspect is designed to detect an increased current through the circuit breaker due to an overload or short-circuit. When an overload occurs, the current will rise quickly and the current will heat the thermal element of the tripping mechanism. Once the thermal element reaches a predetermined temperature, it will cause the circuit breaker to trip and interrupt the circuit.The magnetic aspect of the tripping mechanism is designed to detect an increased current due to an extreme overload or a short-circuit. When an intense overload or short-circuit occurs, the current will rise to a very high level and create a magnetic field around the circuit breaker.
