ICE2AS01 is an offline switcher IC specifically designed by Infineon Technologies, optimized for ultra-low startup and operating power consumptions. It is a suitable solution for applications who require a low quiescent current (Iq), low power dissipation and low external component count. This device can be used in a wide range of AC/DC switching power supplies, such as lighting, adapters, household appliances and industrial control power supplies.
The ICE2AS01 enables a ‘no-load’ power dissipation of 0.1W only, and maximum peak power is 0.25W. The device features both active Burst Mode and hysteretic current mode operation. This gives the system increased efficiency, reduced EMI and improved the light load efficiency. Furthermore, the device has a integrated thermal shutdown protection that ensures safe operation. It also provides a wide range of features, such as a very low start up current, external-period synchronization option, and it offers the possibility of using a variety of pass element configurations.
The working principle of the device is based on the resonant transition DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) topology. It consists of two voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) which control two transistors. These transistors, combined with the resonant circuit and isolation transformer, construct a Boost based half bridge inverter. This is the primary side circuit. The secondary side of the device operates in CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode). The transformer voltage ratio is continuously adjusted by a high-side current sense resistor (RHS) which is fed with an amplified version of the primary current.
The current sense circuit path of the ICE2AS01 has two stages consisting of a loop amplifier and an error amplifier. The first stage loops the inductor current information form the primary side of the transformer back to the LSB1 pin. The second stage is used to adjust the voltage loop gain. This is used to eliminate the inductor current ripple and provide VCC steady supply during light loads. A unique feature of the ICE2AS01 is the low quiescent current of only 100µA under light load conditions. This is enabled by a low drop across the current sensing resistor, and a low quiescent current adjustable regulator. This feature reduces the power consumption of the IC significantly and makes it suitable for applications where power losses have to be kept to a minimum.
The ICE2AS01 is an ideal solution for applications with high efficiency requirements, such as adapters and external data-supplies. It requires minimal external components and enables a very low start up or standby current, making it applicable for a wide range of applications. With its high efficiency, less active losses, thermal protection and integrated features it is a good choice for power supplies requiring low power consumption.
