AC DC converters are commonly used in a variety of applications ranging from industrial systems to consumer electronics. The IRM-20-15 is one type of DC power conversionrectifier system, designed to provide direct current (DC) power from a three-phase AC source to a load. The IRM-20-15 is a diode bridge rectifier system suitable for use in aerospace, ground support, telecommunications and military applications where the performance of the equipment requires clean, pinpoint powers. The IRM-20-15 operates for 50/60 Hz AC line frequency and consists of a set of three-phase AC inputs, which are fed to three-phase diodes bridge. Unloaded, the rectifier produces a DC output voltage of about 330 V rms, which can be adjusted by adjusting the voltage control potentiometer. The voltage control has a range of 200V–500V so that the output can be adjusted from the no-load output voltage.
The IRM-20-15 rectifier converts AC power from a 3-phase utility source and outputs two types of power: “utility” and “grid”. In the utility mode, a full wave, no-load rectifier with a steep line-commutated thyristor switch is used to obtain a wave-shaped regulated DC output voltage. The thyristor switch is the part of the circuit responsible for the harmonic control of the AC input power by controlling the amount of AC power that is allowed to pass through the converter. In the grid mode, the converter is connected in series with a capacitive filter connected to the utility source. This filter helps to reduce the ripple on the input, and also helps to ensure that the input wave-form is sinusoidal. The grid mode is very useful when the utility source is not very stable or when there are high harmonic loads on the system.
The IRM-20-15 also features an excellent power factor, high efficiency and low ripple, suitable for high reliability operations. The three-phase AC line frequency is processed and rectified in one stage, so that the output voltage is a DC output with no ripple. The high power factor and the low ripple make the IRM-20-15 suitable for high dynamic operations. The IRM-20-15 is also suitable for distributed energy installations. It is rated for 50 KW of power output and has a high resistance to noise and surges.
