The ISD4004-12MEIR is a digitally enhanced version of long-standing analog record and playback devices that have been used for decades in the fashion of a sampling card device. Primarily used for sound-recording and reproducing applications, the ISD4004-12MEIR is a single-chip voice recorder and playback device capable of providing digital memory, integrated circuitry and precision audio playback. It is capable of stereo recording/playback at a 24 kHz sample rate, with one-mic mono recording. The maximum sampling rate of a single IC package is 500kHz, but with a master clock frequency of 12 MHz, the ISD4004-12MEIR can sample 25kHz up to a maximum of 24 kHz. The sampling rate is digitally encoded through a reference counter or oscillator, and the samples are stored in flash memory at the rate of one microsecond per line.

In operation, the digital audio signals are processed and stored in a flash memory array. As sound is passed through by the 16-bit ADC, through random access storage or sequential access storage, the voice can be stored. Depending on the type of memory used (Random or Sequential), the ISD4004-12MEIR device can play back different types of audio. Once in flash memory, the recordings can be accessed and played back by the command of an Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

The ISD4004-12MEIR can also yield an amplified, stereo output. It includes innovative audio output technology to generate an 8-bit to 16-bit stereo signal. The integrated amplifier converts the digital audio signals into an analog signal and performs general amplification function. The output power capability is increased to 0.35 W by addition of an external amplifier. With its 0.5W-output stereo amplifier, the ISD4004-12MEIR is an impressive record and playback device.
