The ISL6236EVAL2 evaluation board is a DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS used to evaluate the performance of the ISL6236 IC. It is designed to facilitate easy-to-disassemble, breadboard-style evaluation of the device, featuring jumper selections for configurations and quick-change attachable test points for load and bias measurements. In this article, we will discuss the application field and working principle of the ISL6236EVAL2 evaluation board.The ISL6236EVAL2 board is suitable for a wide variety of applications, including single- and multi-phase DC/DC or AC/DC converters operating at frequencies up to 1MHz. Examples of multi-phase applications include two-phase offline adapters, three-phase offline adapters, or any combination of one- and two-phase half-bridge converters and non-isolated converters operating at different frequencies. It is also useful for low-power, point of load (POL) applications such as USB power supplies, laptop and desktop adapters, or wall-mounted ac/dc adapters. It is a highly versatile board, allowing users to quickly evaluate the ISL6236 controller in a variety of applications.The ISL6236EVAL2 evaluation board incorporates a half-bridge flyback topology for single-phase applications. In this configuration, two inductors are used to store energy and provide regulation. The primary side of the board includes a Power MOSFET, current-sense resistors, an input filter inductor, and supporting components. The secondary side includes an output diode, output filter components, and optional output voltage divider resistors for voltage feedback. The board also features an output sense connection, a soft start pin, and provide fault detection and protection features, such as internal cycle-by-cycle current-limit protection, short-circuit protection, and under-voltage protection. The ISL6236 IC controls the FET through an interface circuit for current-mode pulse-width modulation (PWM) control. The interface circuit also outputs a voltage-feedback signal to the IC that is used to adjust the PWM duty cycle and regulate the output voltage. The switches, inductors, and active components are controlled through an external enhancement-mode MOSFET driver. The ISL6236 IC also provides one unique feature: it allows the user to monitor the current that flows through the power switch in order to set the current limit value for safe and efficient operation.
