Working Principle

The controller regulates the output voltage by operating the MOSFET switch at a constant ‘on-time’ in every switching cycle, based on the input voltage. The output voltage is monitored and adjusted via the external voltage sense resistor.

In the sun-average current mode of operation, the controller regulates the output voltage by adjusting the duty cycle to maintain a constant average current. The ISL6405EVAL2 board includes a programmable current limit setting that allows adjustment of the maximum peak current.

In the peak current mode of operation, the controller regulates the output voltage by adjusting the switch duty cycle based on the peak inductor current. The peak inductor current is sensed via the current sensor and the output voltage is adjusted to maintain a constant peak inductor current. The ISL6405EVAL2 includes a programmable peak current limit setting that allows the user to adjust the maximum peak current for the peak current mode.

The ISL6405EVAL2 also features a soft-start circuit to limit the inrush current, overvoltage protection to protect the powered system during extreme voltage conditions, and an internal temperature monitor for protection of the SMPS against overtemperature. The monitoring of the internal temperature is enabled by the internal temperature sense resistor.
