ISL6529CB-T Application Field and Working Principle

Earlier this year, Intersil released its ISL6529CB-T regulator, which is the latest member of the company’s ISL65XX family of low-power, high-performance regulators.

The ISL6529CB-T has the same features as other members of the ISL65XX family and offers reliability, performance, and features that are unmatched in its class.

This regulator is ideal for applications such as laptop/desktop/server power regulation, ultrabooks and light embedded applications.

Application Field

The ISL6529CB-T can be used for laptop, desktop and server power regulation, and is especially suitable for ultrabooks and light embedded applications. It offers maximum 24A power, adjustable voltage from 0.8V to 5.5V, 1.8V/3.3V/5V pre-programmable output voltage selections, power-on reset and under/over voltage monitoring. Additionally, it features an innovative digital control loop that ensures accurate output voltage regulation, fast transient response and low output noise.

The ISL6529CB-T features one signal control pin that supports a wide range of input voltage signals. This signal control allows this regulator to synchronize with other devices in the system, such as a processor, DRAM, GPU, or other power sensitive components.

Working Principle

The ISL6529CB-T is a controller-based power supply consisting of two primary components: the controller and the power output stage. The controller is responsible for regulating the output voltage and current as well as providing power-on reset, over/under voltage monitoring, adjustable soft-start, and other features. It also supports Atmel\'s I2C serial bus, allowing users to read real-time status of the power supply.

The power output stage consists of an external pull-up resistor and two power MOSFETs. The pull-up resistor sets the bias voltage of the power MOSFETs. The large and small power MOSFETs act as a switch for the voltage regulator, allowing current to flow from the input voltage source and through the output stage when the regulator is operating.

The ISL6529CB-T utilizes a digital control loop to maintain a stable output voltage. The internal feedback circuit provides a voltage signal to the controller that is compared to the reference voltage, and the controller adjusts the output current and/or the pull-up resistor bias voltage in order to maintain a stable output voltage.
