The underlying switching topology is the same as that used with other members of the ISL91107 family and uses a fixed frequency current-mode control architecture to ensure easier programming, high performance and low cost. The ISL91107II is a dc-dc switching regulator which is suitable for a wide range of applications. It is compatible with high frequency and low voltage input voltage conditions, and is especially suitable for portable devices and other battery-powered applications. The device is capable of operating from 2V to 28V input voltage and can adjustable output voltage up to 24V. It is designed to offer high efficiency, fast transient response and low noise. The ISL91107II features integrated features such as a programmable soft-start, an adjustable current limit, multiple skip frequency modes and a thermal protection circuit.

The ISL91107II is based on a fixed frequency switching topology, meaning that a fixed-frequency clock drives a current mode controller which regulates the load current. The current mode control architecture ensures an accurate output voltage regulation over the desired wide range of load conditions, while the fixed frequency operation reduces the total system cost. The ISL91107II is equipped with the patented IntelliPhase technology which realizes the analog, continuous-conduction-mode, that includes peak current mode control without current-sensing, in order to reach higher efficiency levels while maintaining accurate current-limiting capabilities.

The ISL91107II is designed with a wide EQr-coupled inductor array to reduce cost and board area occupied. The output of the IC is applied to the base of a series-NPN bipolar transistor switch that is driven by the gate of a FET. The FET is controlled by the drive signal generated at the output of the error amplifier that compares the feedback voltage to the reference voltage. When the current reaches the current threshold of the current source, the FET gate drive is quickly stopped by the current source.

The device also features an adjustable soft-start from 0ms to 500ms to protect the load from inrush current at startup and reduce the output voltage overshoot. It also features a programmable current limit protection with a typical setting of 3.2A for protecting against output overload conditions. A thermal protection circuit with a default timer of 80µs offers additional protection against overtemperature condition.
