In the world of DC/DC and AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS, the ISL91134IIQ-EVZ evaluation board occupies an important position. It is designed to demonstrate the features of Intersil\'s ISL91134 synchronous rectified controller IC, which is a low cost, highly efficient, controllable, fast and easy-to-use solution for microprocessor core power supplies. As an essential member of the ultra-low quiescent current family, it provides leading-edge features such as an adjustable soft start voltage control and peak current limit for improved efficiency and safety in applications such as notebook adapters, set-top boxes, and other low power auxiliary supplies.
The ISL91134IC offers an impressive performance with up to 90% efficiency, temperature-compensated current limit, and an adjustable fixed frequency wake-up cycle. In addition, the ISL911234IIQ-EVZ evaluation board also benefits from a wide input voltage range (4.5 V to 18 V) and a single output adjustable from 0.7 V to 5.5 V for powering most digital logic applications. The evaluation board also features power good and enable, as well as under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and over-current protection (OCP) for reliable operation.
The ISL91134IIQ-EVZ evaluation board is of great use for application development and experimental investigations of various applications. It intelligently simplifies the design work by displaying all the power supply functions, in particular the power control, soft start, over-voltage and under-voltage protection. Besides performing as a power supply, the ISL91134IIQ-EVZ evaluation board can also be used for testing UVLO threshold conditions, output voltage ripple measurements, and pulse-by-pulse regulation. The evaluation board also provides excellent design flexibility, allowing the user to adjust the frequency, current limit, voltage slew rate, duty cycle, and soft start.
Under normal operation, the ISL91134 synchronous rectifier controller IC continuously monitors the output voltage and adjusts the current limit setting accordingly. This control is accomplished by maintaining a constant reference voltage level at negative control node of the error amplifier, which is proportional to the feedback voltage. The output voltage of the ISL91134IIQ-EVZ can be adjusted over a wide range, and the output voltage and the feedback voltage are compared to generate a precise voltage regulator. The regulator then drive a power MOSFET through an internal driver in order to produce a suitable output power.
In order to enable quick and easy-to-use debugging capabilities, the ISL91134 evaluation board contains a debug I2C interface. The I2C allows the user to interact with the IC by sending commands or reading memory locations in a systematic manner. Additionally, the ISL91134 evaluation board also has an onboard LED indicating when voltage is present on the output, making it easier for the user to conduct visual inspections. The board also includes a test points and an optional SPI interface option, allowing for the debugging of the microprocessor’s power supply using a PC, smartphone or tablet.
