Working Principle of ISL9212BIRZ

The ISL9212BIRZ is a low quiescent current PMIC featuring a high efficiency current mode synchronous buck controller and Li-Ion/Li-Po charge management. It is designed for charging single cell Li-Ion/Li-Po batteries from an input power source of 4.35V to 6.5V. With its driving switches, an adjustable voltage range of 3.2V to 4.6V is provided for single cell Li-Ion/Li-Po batteries.

It integrates high and low-side control FETs to provide good control of the current fed to the battery using a spread spectrum PWM control for low EMI. The state of charge (SoC) indicator supports a flying capacitor average current method enabling simple and cost effective implementation. This method is claimed to be more accurate and economical than the Coulomb count method. The device has two low voltage protection thresholds and one high voltage protection threshold to protect the heavily discharged and overcharged Li-Ion/Li-Po battery.

The ISL9212BIRZ can operate in three modes:

• Active Charge Mode – The charge current is regulated to achieve the pre-defined current limit set in the I-LIM pin.
• Pre-Charge Mode – This mode is used when the battery voltage is below the minimum voltage to perform an active charge cycle.
• Charge Hold Mode – When the battery charging is complete, the IC goes into this mode where the charging current is reduced to a low charge hold current.
