Gyroscopes are devices which measure and maintain angular rate or orientation in a static environment. The ISZ-2510 from Japan-based Tokyo Electronic Industry is a three-axis micromachined silicon gyroscope designed to measure angular rate in three dimensions. This type of gyroscope is suitable for a range of applications including automotive, avionics, robotics, consumer electronics and inertial navigation systems.
The ISZ-2510 detects angular velocity changes using the Coriolis force effect. Known as a vibratory rate gyro, this device works by vibrating a single mass or a pair of masses at a known frequency on a central supporting structure. When angular velocity is applied, the vibrating mass generates a Coriolis force which is orthogonal to both the vibration direction and the applied angular velocity. The motion of the mass is monitored by two pairs of electrodes which sense the orthogonal components of the Coriolis force, enabling highly accurate determination of rate or orientation.
The ISZ-2510 gyroscope uses a micromachined silicon technology to increase the density of the components and reduce the overall size of the device. The unit is capable of detecting small angular velocity changes and high bandwidth output so it is ideal for applications requiring high resolution or fast dynamic response. In addition, the device is designed to be operated over a wide temperature range, from -40 to +125°C.
The ISZ-2510 is typically used to measure angular rate in 3 axes and can be interfaced to digital communication systems and embedded applications such as computers and microcontrollers. For navigation and motion-control systems, a three-axis rate gyroscope can be used to construct attitude references for further manipulation and control of the motion. In automotive applications, motion detectors can be used to monitor the vehicle’s pitch, roll and yaw and to identify violent maneuvers and reactions in a controlled manner. In avionics and space applications, the ISZ-2510 is used to provide attitude data for control and navigation systems.
The ISZ-2510 angle rate gyroscope is an example of Tokyo Electronic Industry’s advanced inertial sensor technology. The device offers superior performance and accuracy, as well as flexibility in the applications for which it can be used. With its ability to operate over a wide temperature range, the ISZ-2510 is suitable for use in applications where environments can vary from very cold to very hot, such as automotive and aerospace use. It is also designed to be extremely robust, reliable and low power.
