Circuit breakers are electrical classifications of power devices that are specifically designed to protect a circuit from damage as a result of short circuit or overload. Circuit breakers are named based on many criteria including their application field, type of power being delivered, and the environment they are used in. The IUGBX1-32101-11 is one such circuit breaker and its application is limited to the marine industry.The IUGBX1-32101-11 circuit breaker is a three-pole thermal-magnetic switch with a bolted design that is specifically designed for operation with AC currents between 380-440V, although current ratings do depend on the amperage of the shore power. Due to its particular application, the IUGBX1-32101-11 requires that each pole carries a maximum of 160A and the overall maximum 250A. It is specifically designed for AC applications and is not able to be used with DC inputs. Circuit breakers protect circuits by breaking the flow of electricity when a set electrical event occurs. The IUGBX1-32101-11 trip characteristics are designed to protect both the extremely high current values that would be assumed while short circuiting, and moderately high overload currents that may occur in normal operation. Both of these conditions can result in thermally-driven circuit breakers melting down, so trip characteristics of the IUGBX1-32101-11 are also designed to respond to longer, more extended over current conditions. The IUGBX1-32101-11 has two trip characteristics; thermal and magnetic. The thermal element is a bimetallic strip that responds to the sudden increase of current in the circuit caused by an overload or fault. The heated strip will bend at a predefined temperature, activating the circuit breaker and allowing a peg to move and cut off the electrical path.The magnetic element of trip characteristics is designed to respond to extended overload or short circuit conditions. There is a solenoid sitting in the circuit breaker that is magnetically connected to a plunger. This plunger is connected to the same electrical path as the bimetallic strip. In an overload situation, the magnetic field created by the solenoid will attract the plunger, creating a feedback loop that will continue until the plunger trips the circuit breaker and open the electrical path.The IUGBX1-32101-11 circuit breaker also has a manual reset mechanism. Upon flipping the reset switch the plunger is reset or retracted from the bimetallic strip, allowing the electrical flow to resume normal operations.Overall, the IUGBX1-32101-11 circuit breaker is specifically designed for use in the maritime industry, however its principles and basic construction are the same as almost all other circuit breakers. It combines thermal and magnetic trip characteristics to respond to a variety of electrical conditions, and has a manual reset switch to allow the circuit breaker to be used again if the electrical fault has been cured.
