Image Sensors are integrated circuits made up of millions of individual pixels which act as tiny light sensing detectors. These tiny light sensing detectors can convert light to electrical signals and in turn, gives us a digital image. The KAF-16200-FXA-CD-B2 is a high sensitivity, large area digital color CCD image sensor made by Kodak. The sensor has a 16.0 MP resolution at an aspect ratio of 4:3, and a 4.6µm square pixel size. It has a color space of Bayer RGB and an active imaging area of 5968 x 4296.

The KAF-16200-FXA-CD-B2 works by transferring light onto a CCD array. CCD stands for Charge Coupled Device. A Charge Coupled Device is a semiconductor device that is used to convert light into an electrical charge. The CCD array consists of a large number of pixels (photo detectors) that detect light and convert it into a proportional electrical signal. These pixels are arranged in a grid pattern and each of the pixels can detect light and record the varying levels of brightness of the image in its entirety, effectively forming a digital image.

When light is present in the environment, it is focused onto the pixel grid by a lens and absorbed by the pixel’s photosensitive element. The reflective property of the photosensitive element can then convert the light into electrons which is then stored in the pixel array. The amount of electrons that is stored in each pixel array is proportional to the brightness of the light present. Once all the pixel arrays have been filled with electrons, the electrical charges in each of the pixels are then transferred to a charge amplifier and then stored in a digital memory device. This signal is then processed for further image adjustment and manipulation in order to obtain a desirable outcome.
