LB-603VP application field and working principle

Catagorizing under Display Modules - LED Character and Numeric, the LB-603VP is a 6 digits panel consisting of digits measuring 3 cm in height face. This panel has a total overall size of 33 mm in length, 7 mm in height and 25 mm in width. It is used mainly to display the score in some of the game consoles and also in calculators. Each LED can be controlled individually, with red as the standard LED colour and yellow also available.

The LB-603VP works on a multiplexing principle, i.e. one LED at a time is illuminated from the actual circuit so that there is no confusion while displaying the numbers. This process is known as multiplexing or multiplexer switching, it is a device which routes the input signals on one input line to multiple output lines. Thus, a single LED is illuminated by one row at a time. The multiplexing is done at a high frequency rate in order to recognize the pattern at a faster rate. It is a low-cost device as it requires fewer ICs and also reduces power consumption.

The LB-603VP is a single sided board. It is driven by a controller IC which is connected by the ribbon cable to the panel and powered by 5V. This panel can be operated in the temperature range of -25°C to +80°C. It is mainly used in calculators and game consoles for displaying the score. It is also used in weighing machines, sending and receiving machines and telephone switchboards for displaying the time and date.
