Optoisolators are devices that use light as an input, thus providing total electrical isolation between the control and controlled circuits. They are typically specified according to the minimum optical output power, the maximum current the output photodiode can supply, and the electrical isolation between input and output. LDA111 optoisolators are Transistor, Photovoltaic Output optoisolators.
The LDA111 is a C-MOS device with a sensor and amplifier section optically coupled in one integrated package. The basic function of the LDA111 is to activate an external transistor in response to an externally applied input signal. Its input consists of an LED, while the output contains phototransistors. It uses transistors in the sensing path, rather than photodiode. This allows for very high optical input sensitivity, and the ability to switch at very fast speeds. The voltage or current across the LED is used to control the voltage output of the photodiode. The output of the photodiode is then used to control a transistor (external) to provide the desired output from the device.
The transistor photovoltaic output of the LDA111 is suitable for providing insulation between low power, low voltage circuits. The LED input provides current equal to the transistor current output, allowing the controllable current output to be set by the ratio of resistor values. The LED input provides a stable optical threshold voltage, while the external transistor allows different values of output current, from microamps to milliamps.
The control of the LED current is determined by the amount of resistance in the circuit. For greater control, the device can be connected in series with a decoupling capacitor. This allows the LED to have a very low offset voltage, which is necessary for high accuracy of the output current. This capacitor is also used to minimize the effect of the output transistor on the LED drive current. The low turn-off time of the LDA111 device also prevents errors in current control.
The maximum voltage across the LED that can be set is 3.0V, while the current is determined by resistance. The maximum current the LDA111 can supply is dependent upon the size of the transistor (external), and can range from 3 mA to 60 mA. In addition, the electrical insulation provided between the input and output is specified as 1500 volts RMS. The maximum operating temperature for the device is 40°C.
In general, the LDA111 is a very versatile Transistor, Photovoltaic Output optoisolator. It can be used to provide total electrical insulation between two circuitry, with an input sensitivity of up to 3V and output currents ranging from 3mA to 60mA.
