The LM25010EVAL evaluation board is a versatile off-line switched mode power supply (SMPS) suitable for a wide range of applications. It is a DC/DC and AC/DC device and can be used in low power consumer, industrial, instrumentation, and telecommunications applications. The board has been designed by Texas Instruments and includes a wide range of components, including a power semiconductor driver, transformer, rectifier, regulator, inductor and capacitor, among other components.
The LM25010EVAL evaluation board uses a buck topology to regulate the input voltage and current to its desired output value. A buck converter works by taking an input voltage and current that may vary, and converting it into an output voltage and current that is more stable and less prone to fluctuation. The buck converter does this by using a power switch to turn off the input to the output at regular intervals, forming a series of pulses. This process, known as Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), is used to control the output voltage and current.
The LM25010EVAL evaluation board features a synchronous buck controller to provide the pulse width modulation. The device is switched at a fixed frequency of 500 kHz and uses a dead-time control to ensure that both the low-side and high-side Power MOSFETs are not turned on simultaneously. The LM25010EVAL uses primary control to sense when the application’s output current reaches a certain level and adjusts its switching frequency accordingly. This helps to prevent over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature conditions. The board also includes a soft-start feature, allowing the current and voltage to reach a stable operating state.
The LM25010EVAL evaluation board’s features also include a comprehensive shutdown feature. This feature senses when the output is over-current, over-voltage or over-temperature and shuts down the device. Additionally, the evaluation board can be customized with a set of resistors and capacitors that allow it to be optimized for the user’s particular application. This includes setting the output voltage, current limit, maximum duty cycle, dead-time and soft-start ramp rate, among other parameters.
The versatility of the LM25010EVAL evaluation board makes it an ideal solution for a variety of DC/DC and AC/DC off-line SMPS applications.
