LM2575N-ADJ is a switch-mode adjustable step-down power regulator, which is a kind of DC DC Switching Regulators. It is from National Semiconductor, it provides 7Amps, with various voltage levels and various adjustable properties. It is mainly applied in distributed power systems, point of load converters and battery operated system.
The LM2575N-ADJ provides constant frequency and temperature compensated. The current mode architecture provides fast transient response, carefree loop stabilization, and excellent line and load regulation. Output voltage can be adjustable between 1.23V and 37V, and current up to 7A peak.
From the structural design, LM2575N-ADJ contains a current mode PWM controller, a power switch, an oscillator, a reference amplifier and a compensation network. The current mode PWM controller monitors the low side MOSFET switch and provides accurate and fast timing control. Its external compensation loop requires minimal design effort, secured highly reliable and stable performance. The power switch has a RDS(on) of 0.09ohm with a drain-source voltage up to 40V. The oscillator can operate up to 1MHz, employed the frequency-folding technique to reduce the size of the inductor and capacitor. The reference amplifier establishes the reference voltage for output voltage setting, it can be adjusted by an external resistor.
When connected with the power supply, inductor and MOSFET switch to the evaluation board, LM2575N-ADJ will start regulate. The pulse width modulation (PWM) control unit receives the feedback signal and compares it to the reference voltage, when the feedback voltage exceeds the reference voltage, the PWM control unit increases the duty cycle to reduce the feedback voltage. Else, when the feedback voltage is lower than the reference voltage, it reduces the duty cycle to increase the output voltage. Then an output voltage regulator is fed the control signal to control the low side MOSFET switch for the output voltage regulation.
The external compensation network connects between the error amplifier and the output voltage pin, it receives the current from error amplifier and outputs to the PWM control unit. That causes the output voltage increases from 1.23V to 37V in adjusting range.
The various adjustable properties makes LM2575N-ADJ suitable for distributed power systems, point of load converters and battery operated system. It resolves the defects of high cost and low efficiency in traditional voltage regulator.
