LM2575T-015 is a device which is considered as part of the Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) family, more specifically, a type of Voltage Regulator and even more specific, a DC DC Switching Regulator. It is used to convert an input voltage in the range of 3V to 40V to an output voltage of up to 1.5V, at an effectual switch frequency of up to 100 kHz. It has several features that improve its efficiency, reliability, size and cost. In addition, it can be installed in a wide variety of equipment, provided that it meets the basic operating requirements.

LM2575T-015’s working principle is based on the buck-boost topology, which is a method for converting an input voltage which is required for operation into an output voltage of a required sign and magnitude. This method of voltage regulation could be considered as a combination of two DC-DC switching regulators, each operating in buck-mode and boost-mode respectively.A voltage regulating process follows a basic operating cycle, beginning with the start-up phase, followed by the on-time phase. This is followed by the off-time phase, the reset and latch phase and finally the soft-stop phase, before the cycle is repeated.

At the start of the cycle, the internal circuitry is reset, forcing the regulate circuit into a “start” condition. This initiates the start-up phase which involves the switching of the buck/boost converter. During this time, the voltage feedback control voltage, generated by a dedicated error amplifier, is regulated to match the reference voltage and the current control, generated by the current sensing feedback circuit, is regulated at the specified threshold. Once the target current level is achieved, the current-mode control is switched off and the voltage control is allowed to regulate the output voltage to match the reference voltage.

In the “on-time phase”, the output voltage will remain either static or slightly changing, dependent upon the state of the power switch, the external components and frequency of operation. During this time, the LM2575T-015 maintains the target current levels, by applying a current-mode control loop and current sensing circuit, ensuring a constant DC output voltage.

The “off-time phase” occurs when the output voltage has matched the reference voltage and the current, generated by the controlled-current compensation means, has been reduced or turned off completely. At this time the converter is placed in a state of “hibernation”. In the reset and latch phase, the voltage feedback control voltage will be reset and latched by the reset and latch circuit and the Buck/Boost converter will be enabled again.

In the soft-stop phase, the current is monitored and the output voltage is lowered to a safe shut down level in an organized manner. This prevents an abrupt output cutoff and helps to reduce the ringing effect that sometimes accompanies voltage drop. Depending on the cycle rate, the resolution of the output voltage and the materials used, this reduces the power dissipation and increases the circuit\'s efficiency.

LM2575T-015’s application field covers a strong range: automotive, consumer electronic, consumer applications, point-of-load (POL) and telecom/datacom. The applications which require voltage conversion from a wide range of input sources and which require high efficiency, fast response time and a low power dissipation are where this device can be very useful. This device was designed to support the Universal Serial Bus (USB) supply voltage requirements but its features are beneficial for a variety of other applications.

LM2575T-015 is a highly efficient IC that is capable of providing an output voltage of up to 1.5V from an input voltage of up to 40V.
