LM2587T-ADJ is a high performance adjustable switching regulator specified over the operating free air temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. This step-up (Boost) voltage regulator IC is available in a low profile 4-pin TO-263 package. The IC runs on a wide 4.5V to 45V operating voltage range, allowing the device to be used in either higher or lower input voltage applications. The operating frequency range is 100 KHz to 750 KHz, providing the user with the ability to optimize switching loss with an external frequency compensation network.

In practical application, the LM2587T-ADJ is capable of delivering up to 1.5A of continuous output current. Fixed output voltages of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, adjustable* and fixed frequencies of 100kHz and 500kHz are also available. Output voltage accuracy is provided through the integrated 0.8% reference. The chip utilizes an on-board 1.25V bandgap reference for improved accuracy in the range of 0.4 – 3.5V.

LM2587T-ADJ is a “DC-DC Switching Regulators”, which is also a category of Power Management IC (PMIC). This type of IC is a “Voltage Regulator” primarily intended for use in regulating the output voltage of an external power supply or voltage source. The output voltage of the regulator is designed to be adjustable through the use of an external resistor divider network and is often configurable through the use of a microcontroller. A “DC to DC Switching Regulator” will typically provide excellent regulation of the output voltage while consuming less power than a linear regulator.

The LM2587T-ADJ features integrated low RDS (ON) power MOSFETs, overload protection, and an adjustable Soft-Start capability. The LM2587T-ADJ is also an ideal solution for applications requiring an adjustable and highly efficient step-up converter operating from a wide input voltage range. The IC operates in three unique switching modes which can be selected by the user depending on the type of application and requirements.

The first switching mode, known as PWM or pulse-width modulation, is the most common mode of operation for DC-DC switch regulators. In this mode, the switches of the power converter are driven in a fixed frequency with variable duty-cycle. This mode allows for excellent voltage regulation by quickly measuring the output voltage and adjusting the duty-cycle accordingly. The second mode, known as Pulse Skipping, is a less common but also a very efficient mode of operation. In this mode, the switches are driven at constant duty-cycle, but their frequency is varied to regulate the output. This mode allows for improved efficiency at light loads, but suffers from poorer voltage regulation capability. The third and final mode is called Burst Mode and is used for the most efficient applications, where very light loads are expected. In the Burst Mode, the switches are driven for a fixed and very short duration, then disabled for a longer period, allowing the system to enter into a low-power (sleep) mode.

The LM2587T-ADJ\'s integrated low resistance power switches, variable frequency or pulse-width modulation, output voltage accuracy, and adjustable soft-start make it an ideal solution for a variety of adjustable step-up (Boost) voltage regulator applications. It is well suited for a wide variety of applications ranging from automotive to embedded and industrial applications, such as portable devices, digital point-of-load converters, DC–DC converter, and local power supplies.
