The LM4040AIM3-5.0/NOPB is part of an extensive family of precision micropower voltage reference devices from Texas Instruments. The LM4040AIM3-5.0/NOPB is a ratiometric, micropower voltage reference, capable of generating a nominal output voltage of 5.0V, with a maximum tolerance of ±0.0001V. Temperature coefficient is specified at a maximum of 2 ppm/°C (MAX 15ppm/°C). This results in a very stable, accurate reference voltage over the device\'s operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. The device is designed and process to meet stringent automotive qualification requirements, and offers superior temperature stability, high output current capability and guaranteed performance over an operating life of >2x107 hours. The device provides an ideal solution for a wide range of applications requiring ultra-low power, high accuracy, reduced board space and stringent environmental requirements.
The LM4040AIM3-5.0/NOPB, designed for use as a Vref in Delta-Sigma A/D converters and as a stable voltage reference in precision voltage measurement circuits, combines highly reliable thin-film device technology with active biasing, reducing the need for external components. It delivers a stable output with no external components necessary, as well as on-chip circuitry to reduce power consumption and maintain power-up accuracy. A single supply operation of 2V to 10V and a low quiescent current of 10uA make the device uniquely suited for battery-powered portable applications with space and power limitations. The device has no significant errors due to output line loading, except for an across-the-line output impedance of 0.5 Ohms. These features make the device ideal for applications that require precise voltage regulation and absolute accuracy in the presence of changing environmental conditions.
In addition to its exceptional accuracy, the LM4040AIM3-5.0/NOPB is designed to safeguard against turn-on transients, inrush current, over voltage, and excessive temperature. On the input side the device contains an internal switch and a power-up ramp circuit to allow for smooth turn-on and to minimize inrush current. On the output side, a current limit feature prevents over voltage by regulating the output voltage to a safe limit when the load current exceeds 10 mA. Additionally, an over temperature protection circuit is included which limits the junction temperature to a safe limit of 170°C. Finally, an open-type package is employed to minimize the effects of thermal transients and to optimize the thermal performance of the device.
