Working Principle

The LM4808M/NOPB is a monolithic Class-AB amplifier. The amplifier produces audio output by amplifying a differential input voltage, as delivered by a preamplifier or other signal source. The voltage gain of the LM4808M/NOPB can be preset to either a nominal value of 20dB or a reduced gain of 14.3dB by connecting a single resistor in series with an external potentiometer.

The LM4808M/NOPB supports both single-supply and dual-supply operation. In single-supply operation, the operating voltage can be set to as low as 2.7V with an external voltage divider; the output voltage can reach as high as 3.2V for 48 ohms load on 3.3V single-supply rail. In dual-supply operation, the device accepts two power supply rails and uses these to generate output voltages up to ±3.7V.

The LM4808M/NOPB’s pop and click suppression circuitry prevents pop and click noise during turn-on and turn-off. It also includes an undervoltage shutdown feature that prevents the amplifier from turning on before its supply voltage is raised above a predetermined minimum level.

The device is available in the thermally superior PowerPAD™ surface mount package. Its proprietary architecture optimises thermal performance and allows the device to be operated from standard printed circuit board materials. This allows the amplifier to meet high performance requirements while minimising board space.
