LM4940TSX/NOPB application field and working principle

The LM4940TSX/NOPB is an integrated audio amplifier. It is ideal for a variety of applications, such as low-power portable audio applications, where small size and high power output capability are desirable. It is also suitable for gain-controlled audio applications, such as microphone preamplifiers, summing amplifiers, or providing voltage feedback from loudspeaker output.

The LM4940TSX/NOPB device includes an internal output driver stage, low supply current, low output offset and bias current, thermal shutdown protection for output short circuits, soft mute, and pop suppression. The output of the LM4940TSX/NOPB is capable of driving 4Ω or 8Ω (minimum) loudspeakers with up to 1.2 Watt of continuous power.

The single-ended LM4940TSX/NOPB can operate from a single-battery and requires only one external coupling capacitor. The device is designed to minimise space requirements in portable applications. The device can be configured to provide a single-rail or dual-rail power supply configuration, depending on the application.

Structure

The LM4940TSX/NOPB is a single-ended integrated audio amplifier. It contains one low-power amplifier, one low-frequency limited amplifier, and one switching amplifier, all integrated in the same package (Figure 1).

Working principle

The LM4940TSX/NOPB has an internal output driver stage, allowing it to drive a low-impedance (8W eq, or higher) loudspeaker. For applications requiring high power and low distortion, the LM4940TSX/NOPB can be configured in a Class AB configuration. This configuration is capable of providing up to 1.2W of continuous power into a 4Ω or 8Ω (minimum) loudspeaker load.

The LM4940TSX/NOPB also includes two low-frequency limited amplifiers, which are used to control the frequency response of the device, and the switching amplifier, which can be used to control the gain. The LM4940TSX/NOPB also includes a thermal shutdown circuit, which will shut off the device if it gets too hot.
