Optics - Light Pipes
Light pipes are an integral part of the optical designs in a wide variety of applications. These applications range from extended illumination systems utilizing light sources over large areas to providing a direct connection between light sources and detectors located in tight quarters. The primary purpose of a light pipe is to facilitate the transfer of light with minimal losses or internal reflections. There is a wide variety of light pipe designs available, ranging from plastic and glass rods, to large flexible channels.
The LMS 033-CTP utilizes a light pipe system that includes two types of light pipes, an ERD light pipe and a C-channel light pipe. The ERD light pipe is composed of a tube of alloy steel, coated with epoxy. This is used for the optical transfer of light from the optical source to the detector within the tube. The C-channel light pipe consists of a specially designed aluminum channel that has the ability to refract and disperse the light. This is then routed through the channels to the detector.
In order for the light transfer system to be effective, several factors need to be taken into consideration. The characteristics of the light source, the distance between the light source and the detector, the geometry of the light pipe, the index of refraction of the fiber, the reflectivity of the fiber interior, and the attenuation of the light due to scattering by dust or contaminants, all affect the performance of the light pipe.
