As the current passes through the copper tin alloy wire, the electrical field will cause electrons to bounce from the wall of the glass capsule, producing heat. This excess heat energy will cause the sand contained inside the capsule to expand, resulting in breaking of the glass and triggering a protective circuit that will rapidly de-energise the system.
