PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC Resettable Fuses are an effective form of over current protection that uses a positive temperature coefficient solid state resistor that switches from the low-impedance conduction state to a high-impedance non-conducting state upon the application of an over current. LR4-190F Working Principle

The LR4-190F PTC Resettable Fuse is composed of a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) element, a temperature sensing element, and a circuit protective element. When a short circuit, over-load or over-temperature occurs, the current rises and the temperature of the PTC element increases, which increases the electrical resistance — thereby depleting the current flow. This action prevents the current in the circuit from further rising, limiting dangerous spikes and protecting the circuit from further damage. The fuse will reset itself upon removal of the over-current condition.

This fuse utilizes a temperature indicating element that allows the fusing characteristics of the PTC element to be determined accurately. The temperature indicating element is located in the middle of the fuse body and is made of material with different fusing temperatures. When the temperature of the PTC element rises above a predetermined level, the temperature indicating element will melt which serves as an indication of an overload.
